for the Alesis Andromeda

Frequently Asked Questions

Q What do i need to use this program?
A PC running Windows '95 or higher with a screen resolution of 800 by 600 pixels, approximately 2 megabytes of free disk space, a Midi interface, two Midi cables and an Oberheim Matrix-6, Matrix-6R or Matrix-1000 synthesizer.

Q Will it run under Windows 95 / 98 / ME / 2000 / XP / NT ?
A It should, but a number of Windows 2000 users have reported serious problems with bank downloads. The program has been tested under Windows 95, 98, 98SE and XP using several Midi interfaces but due to the idiosyncrasies of various OS versions, interfaces and drivers it is impossible to predict or guarantee that this (or any other program) will work on a particular system. I strongly advise you to download the trial version and find out before you buy the registered version.

Q Will it work with Vista?
A  Vista forces all applications to follow strict guidelines on where to save data and output. As it is, Matrix 2001 CAN be installed and used provided you are logged in with full Administrator privileges. I'm currently working on a new version which will comply with the Vista guidelines.

Q I have installed the demo and everything runs smoothly but when i download a bank it crashes the program or causes an endless loop. What the !$@% is happening?
A You probably have Midi Echo enabled on your Matrix. On the Matrix-1000, press [SELECT] five times to reach the Extended Function menu, then press [2] to view the Midi Echo setting. Adjust to [Eof] with the [+] or [-] keys if necessary.

Q Why are the patch names garbled when i download a bank from a Matrix-6(R) ?
A This and other Matrix-6(R) related issues have been solved in version 2.50

Q What about updates?
A Matrix 2001 is still being developed and updated. New versions will always be free for registered users.

Q Why isn't this program Freeware or Open Source ?
A I write programs for a living and synths don't grow on trees :)

Q Any plans for a Mac or Linux version?
A No, but see below...

Q Any plans for a VST or AU plugin version?
A A plugin version is something I am seriously considering.

Q Why can i only store patches in bank 0 and 1?
A Bank 2 and upwards are stored in Read Only Memory and shall forever remain preset.

Q How are the Continuous Controllers linked to the patch editor?
A Refer to to Continuous Controller Map in the Help file for a complete listing.

Q How do i control the Vibrato LFO?
A You can't. Due to an error in the Matrix-1000 firmware many of the global parameters cannot be set.
NOTE: i am planning to include a Master Parameter editor in the next release to improve Matrix-6R support

Q What's happening when i change the Envelope 2 to VCA 2 parameter?
A Due to an error in the Matrix-1000 firmware this particular parameter can only be adjusted by sending the entire set of patch data. Consequently your synth will respond a bit sluggish if you change this parameter!

Q What's up with the Sustain Level of Envelope 1?
A Due to an error in the Matrix-1000 firmware this particular parameter cannot be set by Midi. I've tried to kludge this by selecting any of the 800 preset patches with a similar Env. 1 Sustain Level and then sending all the other parameters. But a quick inventory of the presets revealed this strategy would leave far too many gaps to be satisfactory so im afraid we'll have to live with this. Thankfully there are two other Envelope Generators available and they are not crippled by this peculiar bug.

Q Where can you get a Matrix synthesizer these days?
A They are quite easy to find if you browse the usual sources: local music and pawn shops, classified ads, and of course the Internets...
